Email: add BSC mail to Android: Samsung Email

Samsung Email works with BSC mail if you choose manual setup rather than letting it try to sign you in with default settings.

Before you start

Set your BSC password first if you haven't already. You'll need it partway through.

Samsung Email comes on Galaxy phones. If you'd rather use Gmail or Outlook, see Add BSC mail to Android: Gmail app or Add BSC mail to Android: Outlook.

Add your account

Open Samsung Email. If this is your first account, it opens straight to a provider list. Otherwise open the menu, tap the settings gear, then Add account.

BSC isn't one of the listed providers, so tap Other.

Enter your full BSC email address and your BSC password, then tap Manual setup rather than Sign in. Manual setup is what gets you to the server fields.

Choose IMAP account. Don't choose POP3 account, which downloads your mail to one device and can remove it from the server.

Enter the server settings

Samsung Email shows incoming and outgoing settings on one screen. Fill in all of them.

Both Username fields need the whole address, not just the part before the @ sign. That's the most common thing to cause the email setup to fail.

Tap Sign in.

Finish setup

Give the account a name like BSC Email, and enter your first and last name where it asks what to show on outgoing messages. That's what people see when you write to them, so use the name your professors will recognize.

Tap Done.

Turn on notifications

Open the menu, tap the settings gear, then your BSC account, then Notifications, and switch it on.

Mail will arrive either way, but without this you'll only see new messages when you open the app.

Check which account you're sending from

If you have another account in Samsung Email, new messages go out from whichever one is set as default, and that may not be BSC. Some College offices only accept mail from a BSC address, so this is worth checking before you email a professor or your advisor.

Tap the From line in any new message to see which account is selected and switch if needed.

If it won't connect

Check the Username fields first. Both need the full address including @student.b-sc.edu.

Check that Security type is SSL on both servers rather than TLS or None.

If Samsung Email tried to sign you in without ever showing the server fields, it skipped manual setup. Remove the account and start again, tapping Manual setup.

If you've recently reset your password, remove the account and add it again so it picks up the new one.
