Email: using your BSC email

A few things worth knowing about how the College uses email, and what's expected of you.

This is where the College writes to you

Registration, financial aid, course changes, billing, housing, and messages from your professor, advisor and dean all come to your BSC address. Some of them ask for a response within a day or two, so checking every couple of days is enough to stay ahead of it.

Use it when you write to the College

Some professors and offices only accept messages from a BSC address, so a note sent from a personal Gmail or Yahoo account may not reach them. Sending from your BSC account also tells the person on the other end who you are without you having to explain.

Keep it on your phone

Adding your BSC account to your phone's mail app takes about five minutes, and College messages will come through with your other mail.

iPhone: Apple Mail or Outlook.

Android: Gmail app, Samsung Email, or Outlook.

Writing to a professor or an office

A subject line that says what the message is about gets a faster reply than one that says Question or Hello. Include your full name and the course number if it's about a class, since a professor teaching four sections has a lot of students to place.

Staff read email during business hours, so give it a business day before following up.

Your account is yours alone

Don't share your password, and don't let someone else send mail from your account. Messages sent from your address are treated as coming from you, including anything submitted to a professor.

The College will never ask you for your password. If a message asks for one, see How to spot a fake message.

Keep an eye on your storage

Your mailbox has a size limit. If it fills up, new messages stop arriving, and the College has no way of knowing you didn't receive something.

Deleting old messages with large attachments is usually enough to clear it. If you're getting warnings and can't bring it down, email helpdesk@b-sc.edu.

How long you'll have it

Your BSC address stays active while you're enrolled. If you graduate, withdraw, or step away for a term, contact us at helpdesk@b-sc.edu to find out what happens to your account and to move anything you want to keep.
